Making 100% biodiesel a lower-cost reality for fleet owners

Sunoil Biodiesel and Optimus Technologies have partnered to drive the adoption of 100% biodiesel (B100) across heavy-duty transport in the Netherlands. This collaboration marks Optimus’ entry into the European market and brings together its vehicle technology with Sunoil’s waste-based biofuel to deliver a complete, ready-to-deploy solution for fleet operations. As part of the partnership, Sunoil plans to upfit its own truck fleet with the Optimus Vector System, demonstrating that existing diesel vehicles can operate on B100 while reducing carbon emissions.

Sunoil Biodiesel and Optimus Technologies: Making 100% biodiesel a lower-cost reality for fleet owners
The Sunoil and Optimus teams together at Sunoil’s biodiesel production facility in Kampen, the Netherlands.

The Optimus Vector System enables diesel engines to operate on B100 and integrates seamlessly into existing vehicles. Combined with Sunoil’s biodiesel, it enables emissions reductions of up to 90% compared to fossil diesel while maintaining performance and reliability. Already proven in real-world operations, the system has been deployed in more than 1,300 trucks globally and can be implemented in both new and existing fleets with minor operational changes.

As fleets face increasing regulatory pressure and rising sustainability expectations, the need for immediate and cost-effective solutions is growing. With current and upcoming regulations such as RED III and EU ETS 2, operators must reduce emissions while maintaining competitiveness. In this context, the combination of Optimus’ technology and Sunoil’s biodiesel provides a practical and accessible pathway to achieve significant emissions reductions within existing operations, offering a lower-cost, immediate alternative to electrification.

The collaboration is supported by a commercial agreement under which Sunoil works directly with logistics operators and fleet owners to implement Optimus technology and supply the biodiesel required for B100 operation.

“This partnership allows us to go beyond supplying fuel and deliver a complete solution for fleets looking to reduce emissions today in an affordable manner,” said Jeroen Hovius, Chief Commercial Officer of Sunoil. “We enable fleet owners to run on 100% biodiesel within their existing operations, while maintaining performance and improving the overall business case.”

Opportunities for fleet operators

Sunoil and Optimus are engaging with logistics companies, fleet operators, and shippers to launch pilot projects and fleet upfitting programs that deliver immediate emissions reduction within existing operations.

By combining B100 fuel supply with vehicle upfitting, fleets can reduce emissions while maintaining performance and avoiding costly fleet replacement. The solution also provides a significant cost advantage over alternative fuels like Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

“There is no faster or more cost-effective way to decarbonize heavy-duty fleets than enabling existing trucks to run on 100% biodiesel. Our partnership with Sunoil proves that with the right combination of technology and fuel supply, near-zero carbon emissions are achievable today. Together we’re creating a repeatable blueprint for scaling B100 adoption globally,” said Colin Huwyler, Chief Executive Officer of Optimus Technologies.

To accelerate adoption, Sunoil is developing partnership structures that reduce upfront investment and enable a predictable payback through fuel economics. Early partners benefit from preferential commercial terms and dedicated implementation support.

With initial deployments underway in the Netherlands, Sunoil and Optimus are setting a new standard for practical fleet decarbonization.
