“Sustainability has always been an important driver for us”

Building on our strong history and reputation, working towards a sustainable future.

This made it very attractive for German transport companies to switch to biodiesel”. At first, the Netherlands was rather lagging behind in terms of the promotion of biodiesel as a fuel, because there was no additional obligation here at that time. ,,In the meantime, we have gained a lot of knowledge and are therefore able to respond well to the market needs. Companies know that they can come to us for high-quality products, but also when it comes to biodiesel issues,” says Wilfred Hadders.

Sustainability has always been our core driving force

Sunoil Group operates production facilities in Emmen and Kampen. In Kampen we have direct access to the harbor, ensuring high logistic efficiency and flexibility. In Emmen we have a state-of-the-art production facility and logistics center, which can handle around hundred transactions daily. The company’s in-house lab and R&D ensure ongoing innovation. Combined with its trading office in Amsterdam, Sunoil Group employs over 60 people and collaborates with a network of external experts and partners. We supply our high-grade biodiesel through direct and indirect sales channels to customers in the Netherlands, North, West and South Europe, continental Europe, Scandinavie and the UK.

Sunoil Biodiesel gained a lot of knowledge since the start and can now effectively respond to market needs. Companies know they can rely on us for high-quality sustainable products and biodiesel-related inquiries.”

2004

The idea for a biodiesel plant in Emmen

The concept of establishing a biodiesel plant in Emmen emerged around 2004. The initial idea came from a former shareholder, a German agricultural cooperation. At that time, the use of 100% biodiesel was gaining significant traction in Germany, supported extensively by the German government. Every standard diesel fuel had to contain a percentage of biodiesel, and pure 100% biodiesel was exempt from excise duties. This made it very attractive for German transport companies to switch to biodiesel for greener transport.”

2006

Founding of Sunoil Group

Sunoil Group was founded in 2006 and quickly became a leading producer of high-grade sustainable biodiesel from waste oils and fats in the Netherlands. The company was well-positioned to commercialize its products when the European Renewable Energy Directive took effect in 2009, obliging fuel suppliers like BP and Shell to blend biodiesel with fossil fuels. This strategic move allowed Sunoil Biodiesel to grow as a key player in the biofuel industry.

2009

Pilot company for the Dutch Government

Sunoil Biodiesel was part of the CO2 development board in The Hague and a member of the Corbey Commission (sustainable biomass). In 2009, the company served as a pilot for the Dutch government regarding the introduction of the double-counting regulation for biofuels. This regulation acknowledged the environmental benefits of biofuels produced from waste and residues, further boosting Sunoil’s market position.

Sunoil has continuously improved and optimized its process through its own research laboratory. decreased use of catalysts has enhanced production capacity, ensuring that Sunoil’s biodiesel remains at the forefront of innovation in the biofuel industry. Sunoil’s second-generation biodiesel reduces CO2 emissions by 90% compared to conventional diesel, providing a sustainable and affordable fuel alternative for transportation and heat generation.

2014

Optimalisation and expension capacity in Emmen

Sunoil has made the biodieselproces in 2014 much more energy efficient and more robust to widen the range of feedstock. With this Sunoil achieved a significant increase in C02 savings with their Biodiesel

2018

Opening of the Amsterdam Office

In 2018, Sunoil Biodiesel opened its office in Amsterdam, primarily housing its commercial department. This strategic expansion facilitated better market access and stronger customer relationships across Europe.

2019

Expansion and strategic acquisition

In late 2019, we inaugurated our new logistics hub in Emmen. This state-of-the-art facility enables us to serve multiple trucks simultaneously and provides ample storage for our auxiliary materials. This addition enhances our operational efficiency and supports our commitment to delivering high-quality biodiesel across Europe. By investing in such infrastructure, we ensure that Sunoil remains a leader in the biofuel industry, dedicated to sustainability and excellence.

It was also the year that Sunoil acquired the biodiesel plant with storage and logistic hub in Kampen. This was a strategic and particularly important step with its direct access to a harbor. The facility in Kampen has direct connection with the containerterminal in Kampen which makes it very efficient to load and unload feedstock containers (flexi’s and iso-tanks). In Kampen Sunoil can load barges up to 3,500 mt of product.

2020-2021

Legal and compliance disputes

In 2020-2021, two legal and compliance disputes impacted Sunoil Group’s business and certification. The company took prompt countermeasures to ensure its customers and employees would remain protected, assuring operational continuity by ring-fencing the case. To reinstate certification and safeguard optimal future compliance of its suppliers and procedures, Sunoil Group has doubled down on automation, quality and safety checks, and optimized the sustainability processes.

2023- 2024

Optimalisation and implementation of the latest safety-rules

The company implemented the latest safety rules and is ISO 14001 certified. Both factories made extensive steps in their process optimalisation and automatization.
