Sunoil Biodiesel employs circa 60 people, spread over the factories in Emmen (Sunoil Bio Fuels B.V.) and Kampen (IJsselland Bio Fuels B.V.) as well as a Trading Office in Amsterdam (Cibus Supply & Trading B.V.). An ambitious program is currently being worked on in which upscaling plays a role on the one hand and the business process is innovated on the other.
Red II and ISCC
The Renewable Energy Directive 2018 (RED II) defines sustainable criteria for liquid biofuels used in traffic, and for solid and gaseous biomass fuels for the production of electricity, heating and cooling. ISCC and REDCert are leading certification schemes for Europe and assess for sustainable production, management, traceability (documentation) and greenhouse gas reduction.
Mission for sustainable development
The mission of the Sustainability Department is to support decarbonization in an affordable way in the fields of transportation and heat generation and therefore the Department is responsible for proper compliance with sustainability standards and regulations and on the one hand and on the other plays an important role as an internal source of information and sparring partner for the Commercial Department and the Departments Business and Product Development.
IJsselland Bio Fuels has been NEN ISO 14001 certified since 2021 and Sunoil Bio Fuels is NEN ISO 14001 certified since 2022. These standards describes how to map and improve the environmental performance of the company. By using the system Sunoil can demonstrate that it controls the impact of the organization on the environment, that it meets the requirements and wishes of stakeholders and that it complies with applicable laws and regulations.
CSRD and ESRS
Sunoil is subject to the CSRD – from the 1st of January 2026 – and will have to report according to European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). This means that Sunoil has to disclose information on what they see as the risks and opportunities arising from social and environmental issues, and on the impact of their activities on people and the environment. This is also an important area of focus for the sustainability department.
Environmental Management System
The sustainability department also has an important role to play with regard to the Environmental Management System. The systems (RED II and NEN ISO 14001/14051) are closely intertwined in the area of sustainability requirements.
For the day-to-day business matters the department work closely with the Manager Finance & Taxation and the Commercial Department and is also a formidable sparring partner for the Business and Product development department and in the field of the NEN ISO 14001 the department works closely with the HSEQ specialists. It is the go-to Department for all sustainability-related matters which expertly answers questions from the company. The department is also committed to improving the sustainability framework within the Sunoil Group by contacting the relevant authorities and keeping abreast of changing regulations.
Sustainability focus areas
The Sustainability Department of the Sunoil Group basically has two important focus areas. First of all to enable the company to fulfil all Sustainability requirements in relation to the production of a sustainable biofuel. This relates to the EU Guidelines RED II and FQD, so a more product and production related point of view. The other focus area is more related to the company itself. Through an Environmental Management System, structural attention is paid to the environment in business operations. Two important principles are central to this:
- Comply with laws and regulations and manage environmental risks.
- Striving for a permanent improvement in the environmental performance of your organization

RED III
The RED III (Renewable Energy Directive III) is a European obligation that sets stringent sustainability and environmental criteria for the use of biofuel in Europe.
EU ISCC
ISCC is a certification system for all sustainable raw materials and biofuel markets. Sunoil Biodiesel is ISCC certified and eligible for double counting in various countries such as the Netherlands, Italy and the UK. The entire supply chain, from raw material to end product, is certified and traceable through documentation.
